On March 20th, Capcom’s Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City was launched to the general public. To promote the game a large trans-media campaign was organised by Idea Generation. An alternative reality game was built for mobile platforms by Digicave. The Tom Sawyer Effect worked with ourselves and Reuben Feels to provide an immersive live game to work along side it.
The job was incredibly indulgent for the boisterous children inside of us – an opportunity to really geek off. We built an Arduino-controlled laser trap that players had to crawl around to reach their objective:
We built a fake operating system interface that players had to “hack”. We thought it best to emulate a generic mid-nineties OS style to pay our respects to the series’ heritage:
We re-sprayed and finished some Nerfs for a part of the game that included a shoot-out:
We also built a tongue-in-cheek campaign website with all the pomp of a super-serious security firm – the aim was to pay homage to the corporate melodrama of the antagonistic Umbrella Corporation.
